Definition

A large piece of ice that has broken off from a glacier or ice shelf and is floating in the sea. Only a small part of an iceberg is visible above the water, with most of it hidden below the surface.

Usage & Nuances

Often used literally for the physical mass of ice in the ocean, but also as a metaphor ("tip of the iceberg") for something where only a small, visible part is apparent. Usually singular, rarely pluralized. Not used for ice cubes or small ice in drinks.
