When you are breathless, you find it difficult to breathe or are out of breath, often after exercise, excitement, or surprise.
Usage & Nuances
'Breathless' can describe physical states (after running), or emotional excitement and suspense ('a breathless moment'). Often used with 'with' to specify the cause: 'breathless with excitement.' Not to be confused with 'breath' (noun) or 'breathe' (verb).
