balcony
word
Definition
A balcony is a platform built out from the wall of a building, usually above the ground floor, with a railing around it. People use it to stand outside, get fresh air, or look out from an apartment, house, or theater.
Usage & Nuances
Usually refers to a small outdoor platform attached to an upper floor. In homes, common phrases are 'on the balcony' and 'balcony door'; in theaters, 'the balcony' can also mean the upper seating area. Don't confuse it with 'terrace' or 'patio', which are usually larger ground-level or roof spaces.
