A valedictorian is the student with the highest grades in a graduating class, usually chosen to give a farewell speech at the graduation ceremony.
Usage & Nuances
Primarily used in American and Canadian schools. The speech is a ceremonial honor; not all countries use this term. Gender-neutral, but in Spanish and Portuguese, endings change for gender. Not to be confused with 'salutatorian' (second highest rank).
