less

word

/ˈɫɛs/
les
/lˈɛs/
les

Definition

Used to show a smaller amount or degree of something. It can compare quantities (not as much as), or say something is not as big, important, or strong as something else.

Usage & Nuances

Used before uncountable nouns ('less water'), or with adjectives/adverbs ('less expensive', 'less quickly'). Do NOT use with countable plural nouns—use 'fewer' instead ('fewer apples' not 'less apples'). Often used for time, money, and distance. In informal speech, 'less' is sometimes used with countable nouns, but it's better to use 'fewer' in careful writing.
