despite

word

/dɪˈspaɪt/
di-SPYT
/dɪspˈaɪt/
di-SPYT

Definition

Used to show that something happened or is true even though there was something that might have prevented it or made it surprising. It is followed by a noun, pronoun, or -ing form, not a full clause by itself.

Usage & Nuances

Very common in both writing and speech. 'Despite' and 'in spite of' are very similar; 'despite of' is incorrect. After 'despite', say 'despite the rain' or 'despite being tired', not 'despite it was raining'.
