An archduke is a noble title used mainly in the former Austrian and Austro-Hungarian Empires, ranking just below a king or emperor.
Usage & Nuances
'Archduke' is historical and rarely used in modern times except in reference to history, books, or Austria. Most famous is Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination started World War I. Not to be confused with 'duke,' which is a different (lower) rank.
