昔話や民謡などで、誰かに遠くから呼びかけるときに使う、古風でくだけた掛け声。現代ではほとんど使われません。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

現代日本語では使われません。古い物語や時代劇、またはふざけた雰囲気を出すときに登場します。普段の「おい」や「ねえ」とは違います。

Examples

Suddenly, he called out, "Hos! Who goes there?"

突然、彼は「**おい**！誰だ！」と叫んだ。

The pirate shouted, "Hos! Lower the sails!"

海賊は叫んだ。「**おい**！帆を下ろせ！」

In the old story, the king often yelled "Hos!" to summon his guards.

昔話の中で、王様はよく「**おい**！」と叫んで護衛を呼んだ。

You might hear "hos!" in pirate movies, but no one says it nowadays.

海賊映画では「**おい**！」と聞くことがあるが、今では誰も使わない。

The sailors all cried, "Land, hos!" when they finally saw land.
