何かが他のものに基づいて作られているときや、会社や人の拠点がある場所を示す時に使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「is based on」（～に基づく）や「is based in」（～に拠点がある）としてよく使われます。スラングの「自分らしい」はここでは使いません。

Examples

I thought the show was fiction, but it's actually based on real events.

この番組はフィクションだと思っていたけど、実は本当の出来事に**基づいて**います。

The movie is based on a true story.

Our office is based in Madrid.
