tropic

word

Definition

A tropic is either of the two parallel lines on the Earth — the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn — which mark the most northern and southern points where the sun is directly overhead at noon.

Usage & Nuances

Used mainly in geography and science. 'The tropics' (plural) refers to the region between these lines, not just the lines themselves. Only the singular 'tropic' refers specifically to the lines: 'Tropic of Cancer', 'Tropic of Capricorn'. Not to be confused with 'tropical' (adjective for the region or climate).
