tartar
word
Definition
Tartar is a hard, yellowish substance that forms on teeth if you don't clean them well. It can also mean a type of sauce called tartar sauce, or (rarely) refer to a member of certain Central Asian peoples.
Usage & Nuances
Most commonly used in dentistry ('dental tartar' or 'plaque'). 'Tartar sauce' is a popular condiment with fish. Don't confuse with 'tartaric acid' (chemistry) or 'Tatars' (ethnic group). In dental contexts, 'tartar' and 'plaque' are not the same: 'tartar' is the hardened form.
