A short break or pause in the middle of a performance, such as a play, concert, or movie, usually for the audience to rest or get refreshments.
Usage & Nuances
Used mainly in theater, concerts, and older or special film showings (not with regular movies). Synonyms: 'interval' (UK, esp. theater). Used formally. Not to be confused with 'break' or 'pause', which are more general.
