The act of cutting open and examining the inside of a plant, animal, or body to study its structures. It can also mean a detailed analysis or examination of something.

Usage & Nuances

Formal/scientific term, mostly used in biology and medical contexts ('frog dissection'), but also in critical analysis ('dissection of an argument'). Not to be confused with 'autopsy', which specifically means examining a dead body to find the cause of death.
