মঞ্চ নাটক বা মিউজিক্যালে, মূল অভিনেতা অনুপস্থিত থাকলে তার জায়গায় অভিনয় করার জন্য প্রশিক্ষণপ্রাপ্ত একজন ব্যক্তি।

'understudy' সাধারণত নাটক বা মিউজিক্যালে ব্যবহৃত হয়; অন্য পেশায় নয়। 'be the understudy for someone' বলতে বোঝানো হয় কারো বিকল্প হিসেবে প্রস্তুত থাকা।
