試合や競争で勝つと期待されていない人やチーム。または立場の弱い人。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主にスポーツや物語で不利な立場の人を応援する意味で使われます。「root for the underdog（弱者を応援する）」という表現でよく使われます。必ずしも負ける人とは限りません。
