理論とは、物事の仕組みや理由を説明するための考え方や枠組みのことです。証明されていない仮説や、ある分野の基本的な原理も指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

日常会話で「theory」は推測や意見（'My theory is...'）として使われることが多いですが、学問の場では検証された枠組みを指します。'scientific theory', 'in theory', 'theory and practice'などと一緒に使われます。'hypothesis'とは異なります。
