光が人や物に遮られてできる暗い形が影です。また、何かの気配や後をついてくるものを指すこともあります。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

通常「影」は光が遮られてできる暗い形を指します。「cast a shadow（影を落とす）」「in the shadows（影の中で）」「a shadow of doubt（疑いの影）」などの表現あり。「shade（陰・日陰）」と混同しないようにしましょう。
