必ず行うと約束すること、または必ず起こると言うこと。将来有望である兆しを表す場合もある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

通常は数えられる名詞で、「make a promise」「keep a promise」「break a promise」などで使われる。“promise”は「will」より強く個人的な印象あり。「show promise」「hold promise」は将来性を表す。
