'Preposterous' औपचारिक है, इसका प्रयोग प्रबल असहमति दिखाने या आलोचना के लिए किया जाता है। यह 'विचार', 'सुझाव', 'दावा' आदि के साथ अक्सर आता है। सामान्य बोल-चाल में 'ridiculous' या 'absurd' ज्यादा सुनने को मिलेगा।
