사람이 아프거나 슬프거나 불만일 때 내는 낮은 소리. 불평이나 불만을 표현할 때도 사용된다.

"Moans"는 문자 그대로(고통 또는 쾌락의 소리)와 비유적으로(불평) 모두 사용됨. 자주 쓰는 조합: "moans of pain", "moans about work". "moans a lot"는 불평이 많다는 뜻. 신음은 조용하고 낮은 소리이며, 큰 소리가 아니다.
