Definition

'자기 자신'은 사물이나 동물이 스스로 어떤 행동을 할 때 씁니다. '그 자체'는 오직 그 사물/상황임을 강조할 때 사용합니다.

Usage Notes (Korean)

사람에게는 사용하지 않습니다(그때는 'himself/herself' 사용). 'by itself'는 '혼자서', 'in itself'는 '본질적으로'의 뜻. 강조용으로도 쓰입니다: 'the idea itself'.
