인터넷을 통해 주고받는 메시지 또는 그 시스템을 의미합니다. 누군가에게 전자 메일을 보내다는 의미로도 사용됩니다.

'이메일'은 명사와 동사 모두로 사용됩니다. '이메일 주소', '스팸 이메일', '이메일 확인하다' 등과 자주 함께 쓰입니다. '이-메일' 표기도 있으나 거의 사용되지 않습니다.
