特に警察などによって、誰かをその場に留めて自由にさせないこと。または、誰かを何かの理由で遅らせること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に警察や公的な場面で使う語。例：'detain someone for questioning'は「事情聴取のために拘束する」という意味。日常会話で「ちょっと遅らせる」場合はあまり使わない。「retain」とは意味が異なるので注意。

The police detained the suspect for questioning.

警察は容疑者を事情聴取のために**拘束した**。
