여러 방향에서 총알이 날아와 가운데 있는 사람이 위험해지는 상황 또는 서로 반대되는 의견이나 압력 사이에 끼는 경우를 뜻함.

원래 군사용이지만 비유적으로 논쟁이나 압박 사이에 낀 상황에도 자주 쓰임. '십자포화에 휘말리다' 같은 표현도 많음.
