誰かや何かのすぐ横や隣にあることを表す。比喩的に他と比べる意味でも成句で使われることがある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'beside' は位置を表すのが基本用法だが、'beside the point' などの熟語では比喩的な意味として使う。'besides'（〜に加えて）と混同しないよう注意。
