Raising your hand or making a gesture (often in the military) as a sign of respect or greeting.

Usage & Nuances

Most commonly used for the military gesture of respect, but can describe other respectful greetings. Often preceded by 'is/are' or used with 'while': 'the soldiers were saluting'. Not the same as 'waving'.
