overtake

word

Definition

To move ahead of someone or something, especially by going faster; also, to become greater or more successful than someone or something.

Usage & Nuances

Commonly used for passing other vehicles on the road ('overtake a car'), but also for surpassing in quantity, status, or achievement ('overtake a rival'). In British English, 'overtake' is more common than American English 'pass' for vehicles. Not used for physical acts of grabbing or 'taking over' control (that's 'take over').
