nucleus
word
Definition
The central part of a cell that contains genetic material. Also, the central or most important part of something.
Usage & Nuances
'Nucleus' is common in science (biology, physics) for cells and atoms, but also appears metaphorically for the central part of a group or idea. Usually singular in biology. Don't confuse with 'core'—'core' is slightly broader and less technical.
