jib
word
Definition
A "jib" is a triangular sail set at the front of a sailing boat, or the projecting arm of a crane.
Usage & Nuances
Mainly nautical or engineering vocabulary. In sailing, "jib" always refers to the front sail; with cranes, it's the projecting horizontal arm. Don't confuse with "jibe" (meaning to change tack or, informally, to agree). Rarely used outside these technical contexts.
