Factions are smaller groups within a larger group, often created because of disagreements or different interests. They are common in politics, organizations, or any community with some internal division.
Usage & Nuances
Mostly formal or academic, used in politics, workplace, or history. Common phrases: 'rival factions', 'split into factions'. Not to be confused with 'fractions' (math parts). 'Faction' can also refer to a genre combining fact and fiction, but that's much less common.
