「smears」は、何かが擦りつけられてできた汚れやしみ、または人の評判を傷つけるための虚偽や中傷のことです。

物理的な「しみ」や「汚れ」だけでなく、評判を落とす「中傷」の意味もあります。「smear campaign」や「smears of paint」のように使います。'smile' や動詞の'smear'と混同しないよう注意。
