ある物事や伝統が特定の過去の時点から存在していることを表す表現です。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

歴史的な物や慣習、建物などについて使われ、'to'や'from'と共に「〜に遡る」のような形でよく用いられます。人物についてはあまり使いません。
