A law that has been officially passed by the legislative branch of the U.S. Congress. It can also be used informally to describe something very difficult to get approved or to make happen.
Usage & Nuances
Formal when talking about official U.S. laws; very often used informally or humorously to describe something that is extremely hard to achieve ('It takes an act of Congress'). Don’t use for general laws in other countries. Compare with 'bill' (not yet a law) and 'law' (broader term).
