都市の地下に存在する電車のシステムで、多くの人が公共交通機関として利用します。アメリカ英語では主に電車を指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

アメリカ英語では地下鉄を指しますが、イギリス英語では'underground'や'tube'が一般的です。'subway station'や'take the subway'などの表現で使われます。
