تُستخدم لوصف شيء تم قطعه أو تمزيقه بأداة حادة، أو تم تخفيضه بشكل كبير.

تستخدم كثيرًا في الأخبار والأعمال للإشارة إلى تخفيضات كبيرة (مثلاً 'prices were slashed')، وأيضًا بالمعنى الحرفي للجرح. يدل على القوة والسرعة، وليس لقطع خفيف أو بسيط.
