繊維などをねじって作られた、丈夫で太いひもやロープのこと。物を縛ったり、引っ張ったり、登ったり、固定するのに使う。

「ropes」は「rope」の複数形。「jump rope」は縄跳び、「climbing rope」は登山ロープ、慣用句「learn the ropes」は仕事などの基本を学ぶ意味。細い「ひも」や「糸」とは区別すること。
