معاملة شخص ما بشكل سيء للغاية، خاصةً بسبب عرقه أو دينه أو معتقداته السياسية أو عرقيته، وغالبًا لفترة طويلة.

Usage Notes (Arabic)

غالبًا ما يُستخدم في سياقات رسمية أو قانونية أو تاريخية. كثيرًا ما يترافق مع 'for' (كما في "persecuted for their beliefs"). لا تخلط بينها وبين 'prosecute' (المقاضاة قانونيًا). الكلمة تدل دائمًا على ظلم ومعاناة.
