公の場や法廷、儀式などで立てる正式で重い約束。または、真実を誓う宣言。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「take an oath」「swear an oath」「under oath」などの表現でよく使われます。「promise」よりも格式が高く法的・宗教的な場面で使われることが多いです。ごく稀に「汚い言葉」の意味もありますが、学習者にはあまり重要ではありません。
