두 사물 사이의 빈 공간이나, 사람이나 그룹 사이의 차이 또는 부족함을 의미함.

실제 공간이나 추상적 차이(지식, 세대 등)를 모두 나타냄. 'bridge the gap'(격차 해소), 'fill the gap'(공백을 메우다) 등의 표현에 자주 등장.
