自分自身を個人として考える心の一部。日常では、過剰なプライドや自意識過剰という意味で使われることが多い。

心理学や日常会話の両方で使われるが、日常では否定的な意味（例：'big ego'＝'自意識過剰'）が多い。「hurt someone's ego」「boost your ego」「ego trip」などの表現あり。健全な自信や自己肯定感と混同しないこと。
