Definition

宇宙で天体が他の天体やその光を遮る現象。太陽や月が隠れる日食や月食など。また、何かが目立たなくなる、重要性が薄れるという意味でも使うことがある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'日食'は太陽、'月食'は月に使う。比喩で使う場合は「（人や物が）〜をしのぐ」と表現される。動詞より名詞形の方が一般的。'ellipse'（楕円）とまちがえないよう注意。
