何かの一番上、もしくは頂上に位置することを表します。主に文語や文学作品で使われる語です。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

日常会話ではあまり使われず、物語や詩などの文語的な表現で用いられます。“on top of”と同じ意味ですが、より格式ばったニュアンスです。
