誰かがどこかへ行く途中で、予期せずに止められ、攻撃や遅延などの目的で妨害されること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

主に文語や文学で使われ、日常会話ではあまり使われません。過去形（“was waylaid”）で登場することが多いです。予期せぬ妨害や待ち伏せに使われます。

Examples

The traveler was waylaid by thieves on the road.

旅人は道で盗賊に**待ち伏せされた**。

He was waylaid and could not reach the meeting on time.

彼は**待ち伏せされて**、会議に間に合わなかった。

The messenger was waylaid on his journey.
