더듬거리며 말하다펑펑 소리를 내다

Definition

누군가 깜짝 놀라거나 당황해서 빠르고 불분명하게 말하거나, (엔진·불 등) 갑자기 끊어지는 듯한 소리를 낼 때 사용한다.

대체로 비격식적이다. 당황하거나 급하게 말할 때, 또는 엔진·불 등에서 갑자기 튀는 소리에 사용. 'stutter'(말더듬)와는 다름.

The boy splutters when he tries to answer quickly.

그 소년은 급하게 대답하려다 **더듬거리며 말한다**.

The car engine splutters before it starts.

자동차 엔진이 시동 걸기 전에 **펑펑 소리를 낸다**.

He splutters with laughter at the joke.

그는 농담에 웃으며 **더듬거리며 말한다**.

"W-what do you mean?" she splutters, completely shocked.
