선거나 경쟁 등에서 누구와 맞서거나 경쟁하는 것을 뜻한다. 또한 일반적으로 반대하거나 충돌하는 상황에서도 쓴다.

정치나 스포츠에서 주로 쓰이며, 'run against a candidate'는 상대후보로 출마하는 것을 의미함. 달리기 경주에서의 '달리다'와는 다름.
