Definition

昔や古典文学で使われた、「言った」という意味の古語です。詩や歴史物語でよく使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

現代日本語ではほぼ使われませんが、古典作品や時代劇の雰囲気を出すときに使います。かならず話し手の前に置きます。

Examples

Quoth the old man, "Be patient."

「我慢しなさい」と、老人が**曰く**。

"It is done," quoth she.

「終わった」と、彼女が**曰く**。

“I shall return,” quoth he.

「必ず戻る」と、彼が**曰く**。

Nevermore, quoth the raven.

「もう二度とない」と、カラスが**曰く**。

“We are lost!” quoth the knight in despair.
