A cannonball is a large, round metal ball that is shot from a cannon. It can also mean a type of diving into water where you tuck your knees and splash a lot.
Usage & Nuances
Used literally in historical/military contexts, and playfully for the jump or splash at pools. As a dive, 'do a cannonball' is very informal and common among kids. Not to be confused with 'cannon' (the weapon).
