무엇인가 주위를 원을 그리며 움직이거나 공중에서 도는 것. 생각이나 소문이 빠르게 퍼지는 것을 뜻하기도 한다.

물리적 움직임(먼지, 물, 잎 등)과 비유적으로 생각이나 소문에도 쓴다. 'rumors swirl around'에 자주 쓰임. 공식∙비공식 상황 모두 사용.
