Definition

공포, 충격 또는 물리적인 힘 때문에 갑자기 뒤로 물러나는 것. 신체적이거나 감정적인 경우 모두 사용된다.

감정적으로 쓸 때는 공식적/문학적이다(예: 'recoil in horror'). 신체적 움직임, 특히 총기 반동에 자주 쓴다. 단순히 뒤로 움직이는 경우엔 'step back' 등이 더 자연스럽다.

She recoiled when she saw the snake.

그녀는 뱀을 보자 **뒤로 물러났다**.

The gun recoils each time it is fired.
