어떤 일을 잘못해서 결과가 엉망이 되거나 혼란스러워지는 것.

비공식적이고 다소 비판적인 뉘앙스. 실제로 어질러 놓을 때나 일 등을 망쳤을 때 모두 사용함. 'make a mess of dinner', 'make a mess of the presentation'처럼 대상이 있는 경우 자주 씀.

He made a mess of his homework and had to start again.
